Noah: Hello! I’m Noah and this is Like You, a mindfulness podcast for kids. Today we’ll talk about feeling proud of yourself. First, a word for the grownups. Like You is listener supported, and I’d love to have you join us at patreon.com/likeyoupodcast where you can get early access to each episode and other special patron perks when you sign up to make a monthly donation.

We also appreciate it when you spread the word about our podcast by telling friends or leaving a rating and review on Apple Podcasts. Alright, listeners of all ages, find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. During the podcast, you’re welcome to speak out loud and play along. Or if you’d rather just think your responses quietly in your mind, that’s ok too.

Have you ever noticed that you may stand or sit differently depending on how you are feeling? Like when you’re feeling sad, how might your body show that? You might slump your shoulders and let your head droop. You may frown and feel like every part of your face is hanging down, down, down. What about when you feel happy? Does your body stand up a little taller when you feel happy? Your face may smile, your eyebrows might raise up. Maybe you feel extra energy running all through your body.

What if I told you that just the way your feelings can have an effect on how your body feels, the way you hold your body can have an effect on how you feel inside. Let’s give it a try with our breathing exercise.

We’re going to hold ourselves with pride and see how that makes us feel. If you’re able to stand, get up on your feet now. If you need to remain seated you can still adjust your body as you’re able. Stand up tall and straight. Raise your chin slightly. Pull your shoulders back, and stick your chest out. Now raise your eyebrows and smile. How are you feeling now that you’re standing proud? Let’s keep this going as we add breathing. Imagine your chest is a balloon, and each time you breathe in, I want you to puff your chest out as far as you can like a big balloon. Then when you breathe out, make a sigh of satisfaction like you’re really pleased with yourself. Like this [sigh]. Here we go. Take a deep breath in and puff out your chest. Stand proud. Now sigh. Once again. Imagine your chest is a balloon as you breathe in and puff your chest out with pride. Hold that breath a moment, then let it out with a sigh. This time, let’s add your arms. You can put your hands on your hips, or raise them wide above your head, whichever makes you feel most proud and powerful. Now take one more deep breath, filling your chest like a balloon. Stand proud, and then let out a sigh.

How do you feel now? Just take a moment to notice how you’re feeling in each part of your body. I want you to hang on to this memory of how your body feels when you hold it with pride.

Now on the count of three we’ll say I like me. 1-2-3. I like me.

I like you too. I like you for who you are on the inside. And I want you to know that I am proud of you. Are you proud of you too?

Let’s talk about pride. What makes you feel proud? Is it when you learn something new? When you work hard on achieving a goal? Is it when you play a game you’re really good at? Or when you draw a pretty picture? Are you proud when you make a good grade, or make a friend laugh, or when someone gives you a compliment? There are many things that might fill you with a feeling of pride. Each and every person has their own things to be proud of. Take a moment to remember a time you felt proud. Close your eyes and remember how you felt. Take a few more deep breaths while you remember that feeling.

It’s good to think about the things that make us proud, because we don’t always feel that way. What would you call the opposite of feeling proud? Embarrassment?  Shame? Disappointment? Maybe you’d just say it’s feeling bad about yourself. Just like we all have proud moments, we all have moments where we don’t feel very proud of ourselves. Have you ever felt that? When? When you made a mistake? When you got an answer wrong? When you tried your best at something and still couldn’t do it? When someone else said mean things to you? When we’re feeling bad about ourselves, we can pull out one of our proud memories to remind ourselves how we felt then. Because that same person you were when you felt proud is the same person you are when you’re feeling ashamed or embarrassed. You are always you. And you are capable of amazing things.

Now I want you to know something else about pride. Often people are proud about their accomplishments, about the things they’ve done, and goals they’ve achieved. And it is certainly good to feel proud of yourself when you do something big. But there is a deeper kind of pride that comes from being proud of who you are inside. This kind of pride is not about the big things you’ve done, it’s just about who you are. When you learn to be proud of who you are, then you know it’s ok to make mistakes. It’s okay to try something new and fail. It’s ok to not know the answer to something. Because we all mess up sometimes. And we never stop learning and growing. And even when we don’t get things right, we can still be proud of who we are.

And when I say I’m proud of you, that’s what I mean. I’m proud of you for who you are, not for what you do. Whether you get an A+ on your test, or get every question wrong, I am proud of you. Whether you score a game winning goal, or throw the ball out of bounds, I am proud of you. Whether you come in first place or last, I am proud of you.

So here’s a new song. While you listen, stand tall, close your eyes, give a smile, and sway side to side, and let yourself feel proud of who you are.

I’m proud of you

And I hope that you are too

Not because of what you do

But just for being you

I’m proud of you

And I hope that you’re proud too

And as long as you are you

that always will be true

I’m proud of you

Whether you lose or whether you win

Think a thought that makes you grin

Wherever you go or wherever you’ve been

Be proud of who you are within

I’m proud of you

And I hope that you are too

Not because of what you do

But just for being you

I’m proud of you

And I hope that you’re proud too

And as long as you are you

that always will be true

I’m proud of you

Whether you fly or whether you fall

Lift your eyes up and hold your head tall

If you win the game or if you drop the ball

You’re still the same you after all

I’m proud of you

And I hope that you are too

Not because of what you do

But just for being you

I’m proud of you

And I hope that you’re proud too

And as long as you are you

that always will be true

I’m proud of you

Now what better way to continue feeling proud, than by saying a few affirmations? This is another great thing you can do when you’re feeling embarrassed or ashamed. Say few affirmations to yourself, out loud or inside your head. We’ll say a few together now. I’ll say each one twice. Listen once, then say it with me the second time, either out loud or inside your mind.

There’s no one better to be than myself

I choose to be proud of myself

I embrace the greatness within me

It’s ok to make mistakes

I inhale confidence and exhale doubt

I will do my best with whatever comes my way

I love myself for simply being me

Now smile and take a few slow, deep breaths as we wind down our time together.  I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon. Until then, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
