Owen: Hi, I’m Owen and I am six. I like [the] podcast because it makes me feel less scared, and happy.

[intro music]

Noah: Hello! I’m Noah and this is Like You, a mindfulness podcast for kids. Thank you, Owen for sending us that voice message. I’m proud to know that this podcast helps you feel less afraid, and fills you with happiness. On this episode we’ll make three lovingkindness wishes. So listeners of all ages, find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. You’re a part of this podcast too! If I ask questions or invite you to play along, your can speak out loud or move around as you’re able. Of course,  if you’d rather just think your responses quietly in your mind, that’s ok too.

First let’s take a moment to focus on the rhythm of our breath. Close your eyes, and for a a few seconds just notice how you’re breathing. You don’t need to change anything about it. Just observe your breath. Is it fast or slow? Is it heavy or light? Are you breathing through your mouth or your nose, or both? There is no right or wrong answer to these questions. Right now, you’re just noticing what is happening with your breath. Good. Each one of you listeners will have your own natural rhythm to your breath. Have you ever thought about the rhythm of your breath? If you’re not familiar with the word rhythm, it’s a musical word, and it’s sort of like a beat, or a pattern. What if you and me, and everyone listening all tried breathing together with the same rhythm? We can pretend we’re a huge breath band – a breath orchestra! As the podcast host, I’ll be the conductor. Here’s how we’ll do it. Instead of using my words to tell you how to breath, I’ll just starting breathing in a rhythmic pattern. You listen to that rhythm and then join in, breathing with the same rhythm as me. And imagine hundreds of other listeners all breathing along with us like an orchestra. I’ll turn the podcast music down now, so the only sound with come from us breathing together. Listen first, then join in.

[breathing]

Great job. That was a long and slow rhythm. Now Let’s try something a little bouncier. Two quick breaths in and a longer breath out. Listen then join in.

[breathing]

Let’s try one last rhythm. Three breaths in, three breaths out. Listen then join in.

[breathing]

Wonderful job. I think we make a great breathing orchestra.

Now on the count of three, we’ll all say I like me. 1-2-3. I like me.

I like you too. You have many things that make you unique, special, and exciting. You have many other things that you share in common with others. We’re all connected, and there is a place in the world just for you.

Now I’d like to grant you three wishes. These are my favorite kind of wishes – lovingkindness wishes. They are wishes you can make for yourself or for other people. It’s like making a wish to send out positive, loving, friendly thoughts and feelings.

Start by thinking about someone who you care for deeply, someone you love. Maybe that’s a parent or a grandparent, a sibling, a classmate or a friend. When someone comes to mind, spend a few moments thinking about them. Maybe even close your eyes and picture them.

What sorts of feelings or thoughts come to mind when you think of this person?

Now imagine sending a wish to that person. You can do this by saying or thinking “I wish for you to be happy, to be healthy, and to have what you need.”

How did it feel to send a wish to that person?

For your second wish, think about someone who may sometimes frustrate or annoy you. Spend a few moments thinking about that person. Again, you may even picture them in your mind.

What sorts of feelings or thoughts come to mind when you think of this person?

Now imagine sending a wish to that person. Picture their face as you say or think “I wish for you to be happy, to be healthy, and to have what you need.”

How did it feel to send a wish to that person?

And finally, we come to your third wish. This time you’ll send a wish to yourself. So picture yourself in your mind. Or if there’s a mirror nearby, you could even look at yourself in the mirror. Spend a few moments thinking about you.

What sorts of feelings or thoughts come to mind when you think about yourself?

Now send yourself the same wish. “I wish for you to be happy, to be healthy, and to have what you need.”

How did it feel to send a wish to yourself?

I hope that sending wishes helped you feel wonderful, and filled you with wonderful feelings for others because up next we have a song all about that feeling called wonder.

One, One, Wonderful

Full, Full, Full of wonder

One, One, Wonderful

Full, Full, Full of wonder

One Two Three

Four Five Six

What a nice mix

One, One, Wonderful

Full, Full, Full of wonder

One, One, Wonderful

Full, Full, Full of wonder

Ten nine

8, 7, 6, 5, 4

Three Two

How do you do?

One One Wonderful

Now it’s time for today’s affirmations. Affirmations are words you can say about yourself to help you remember how wonderful you are. I’ll say each affirmation twice. You can listen the first time, then say it with me the second time, either out loud or inside your mind.

There’s no one better to be than myself.

The world needs someone like me

I can make a difference.

I deserve to be loved.

I am full of joy.

Good things are going to come to me.

I can make my dreams come true.

Now smile and take a few slow, deep breaths as we wind down our time together. I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon. Until then, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
