[intro music]
Noah: Hello! I’m Noah and this is Like You: Mindfulness for Kids. I’m very glad you’re here. On this episode we’ll be making friendship wishes. So listeners of all ages, find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. As I ask questions and invite you to say affirmations, you’re welcome to speak out loud, or as always, you can just think your responses quietly in your mind.
Let’s start with a breathing exercise to help relax your body and focus your mind. I’ll sing a song about breathing and all you have to do is breathe along. You’ll even hear the sound of a breath breathing in and out with the rhythm of the song. Just match your breath with that and you’re sure to catch on quick. Here we go.
Breathe in
Then out
That’s what this song’s about
Breathe deep
Then sigh
Blow the clouds out of the sky
Breathe in
Then out
That’s what this song’s about
Breathe deep
Then sigh
Sunny feelings fill the sky
Breathe in
Then out
That’s what this song’s about
Now, on the count of three let’s all say I like me. 1-2-3. I like me.
I like you too. You are beautiful on the outside and the inside.
I’d like to take a few moments now to think about friends. Friends come in all forms, shapes, colors, and sizes. Friends can be the kids you go to school with, neighbors who live nearby, or people from your church, synagogue, or mosque. Friends may also be people you’ve met while playing sports, or going to a summer camp. And friends may even include those living in your house – parents, siblings, or even pets. A friend is anyone who you enjoy being around, who you trust, who treats you with respect and makes you feel good about who you are.
With all that in mind, I want you to spend a few moments thinking about all the people in your life who you might call friend. [15 seconds silence]
You must be a very special person to have all those friends. And I know all your friends feel grateful to have you in their lives.
To show our gratitude for our friends, we are going to make wishes for them, sending out our hopes that good things will happen for the people we love.
But being a good friend to others starts with being a good friend to yourself, so let’s start by making some wishes for you. Close your eyes. Relax your shoulders. Let your breath be steady and deep. Now repeat each of these wishes after me.
I am grateful to be me.
I wish to be healthy and happy.
I wish for good things to come my way.
Now take a deep breath and gently blow these wishes out into the world.
Good job. Now let’s make some wishes for a friend. With your eyes closed, I want you to think about a very close friend. Maybe it’s the person you consider to be your best friend. Picture that friend in your mind. Picture their face, their hair, their smile. Think about how it feels to be with them.
Now repeat each of these wishes after me.
I am grateful to be your friend.
I wish for you to be healthy and happy.
I wish for good things to come your way.
Now take a deep breath and gently blow these wishes out into the world. Imagine the wishes drifting through the air until they make their way to your friend. And as your wishes reach them, they suddenly feel a warm, happy feeling. They breathe a sigh, and they smile, and they know that they are loved.
Next let’s make some wishes for another friend. This time I want you to think of someone who is not your best friend. Someone who you don’t spend a lot of time with, but who you are happy to see whenever you do. Picture that friend in your mind. Picture their face, their hair, their smile.
Next we’re going to make a more difficult wish. Have you ever been angry with a friend? Have you ever gotten into an fight with a friend? Is there a friend who you are upset with right now?
It is normal and natural for friends to have their ups and downs. Sometimes the people we love most can make us the maddest of all. It is possible to be angry with someone and still be their friend. So we’re going to make some wishes for a friend who has made you mad. Maybe it’s someone you were mad at in the past and you’ve already patched things up, or maybe you’re mad at them right now. Picture that friend in your mind. Picture their face, their hair, their smile.
Finally, we’ll make one last set of wishes. These wishes are for a future friend, someone you haven’t met yet. You will continue to make friends throughout your life, and you never know when a new friendship will begin. So I want you to imagine a future friend. You don’t know their name, what they look like, or where they are from, but they are out there somewhere just waiting to get to know you.
Now repeat each of these wishes after me.
I look forwarded to becoming your friend.
I wish for you to be healthy and happy.
I wish for good things to come your way.
Now take a deep breath and gently blow these wishes out into the world. Imagine the wishes drifting through the air until they somehow find their way to your future friend. And as your wishes reach them, they suddenly feel a warm, happy feeling. They breathe a sigh, and they smile, and they know that they are loved.
Now it’s time for affirmations. Affirmations are words you can say about yourself to remind yourself how wonderful you are. I’ll say each affirmation twice. So you can listen the first time, then say it together with me the second time. Here we go.
I search for goodness in the people I meet.
I speak kindly to others and myself.
I have people who love and respect me.
I am a good friend.
I am blessed with wonderful friends.
We all deserve love.
I am an amazing person.
Now let’s take a few slow, deep breaths as we wind down our time together. If any of those affirmations stood out to you, feel free to write them down, or just store them safely in your mind to say when you need it. If you have an affirmation that is special to you, I would love to hear it! If you’d like to send a recording of your favorite affirmation to play on the show, have a grownup check our website or episode notes for more information.
Now let’s end this episode with a song. This song is called I Am Good. Just like you can be friends with someone and still get angry with them sometimes, I also want you to know that you are a good person even though you sometimes do bad things. We all make mistakes or bad decisions sometimes, but deep down inside you are good. Feel free to sing, dance, or relax and breathe deep as I sing.
I am good
Deep inside
Deep inside
I am good
Sometimes I do good things
Sometimes I do bad
Sometimes I do bad things
Sometimes I do good
But I’m still good
Deep inside
Deep inside
I’m still good
Breathe in the good
Blow out the bad
I am good
Deep inside
Deep inside
I am good
I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon. Until next time, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
