Noah: Hello! I’m Noah and this is Like You, a mindfulness podcast for kids. I’m so glad you’re here! On this episode, we’ll make a few wishes – for people we love, for people we don’t know, and for ourselves. So listeners of all ages, find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. I invite everyone listening to be a part of this podcast – That means you! You can use your imagination, share your thoughts, and speak up when I ask questions or invite you to say affirmations. Of course, if you’d rather just think things quietly in your mind, that’s ok too.

Let’s begin with a breathing exercise to help calm your body and clear your mind. This breathing exercise has a song to go along with it. All you have to do is listen to the words and breathe along with the instructions. First you breathe deep, then you hold it for a moment, then you slowly blow it out. As you listen, just keep breathing slowly and deeply in rhythm with the song.

Breathe deep

Hold it for a moment then

Slowly blow it out

Breathe deep

Hold it for a moment then

Slowly blow it out

And while you’re breathing

Think of happy things

Relax

Keep breathing as I sing

Breathe deep

Hold it for a moment then

Slowly blow it out

Breathe deep

Hold it for a moment then

Slowly blow it out

Fill your lungs

As you breathe along

Hear your heart beat

Adding rhythm to your song

Breathe deep

Hold it for a moment then

Slowly blow it out

Breathe deep

Hold it for a moment then

Slowly blow it out

Great breathing! Now on the count of three we’ll all say I like me. 1-2-3 I like me.

I like you too. You are confident, calm, and kind.

Today we’ll take some your kind and loving thoughts and learn to turn them into wishes you can make for others and for yourself. I call it a lovingkindness wish. Continue breathing slow and deep. You may want to close your eyes to help focus. Now I want you to think of someone who you love very much. Someone who helps you feel safe and understood. Someone who brings out the best in you. Maybe it’s a parent or a sibling. Maybe it’s a grandparent, uncle, aunt, or cousin. Or it could be a friend or a teacher or a coach. It can be anyone you choose.

Once you’ve picked someone, take a few moments to picture them in your mind with as many details as you can think of. Picture their face, their hair, their eye color, their skin, their clothing. Maybe even imagine the way they smell. Now I want you to imagine that person being surrounded by love. It may help to think of your favorite color and picture a colored light glowing all around them. Now you’re going to say 3 wishes for this person. I’ll say each wish twice so you can listen, then repeat it.

I wish for you to be healthy.

I wish for you to be happy.

I wish for you to be safe.

How did it feel it make those wishes for someone you love?

Next we’re going to turn this loving feeling outward toward the world as we make another set of wishes. This time I want you to imagine someone you don’t know very well. It could be a neighbor or a classmate. Or you could imagine a child your age in another country. Someone you’ve never met at all. Imagine that person in your mind. What do they look like? Imagine that person surrounded by that colorful glow of love. And repeat those same three wishes.

I wish for you to be healthy.

I wish for you to be happy.

I wish for you to be safe.

How did it feel to make those wishes for someone you don’t know?

Now we’ll make one more set of wishes. So take all those loving feelings that you’ve been sending out to other people, and turn them inward toward yourself. Picture yourself in your mind. Imagine your own face, your hair, your skin, your favorite outfit. Now imagine yourself surrounded by love, picturing that same glowing light. There are many people in your life who care very much about you. For the final three wishes, you can just listen as I make these wishes for you.

I wish for you to be healthy.

I wish for you to be happy.

I wish for you to be safe.

Now let’s say a few affirmations together. You can say them out loud or inside your head. I’ll say each affirmation twice. So you can listen the first time, then say it together with me the second time. Here we go.

I love myself exactly as I am.

I am grateful for all that I have.

I am proud of who I am.

I am caring to others.

I like what makes me different.

I’m glad that I am me.

Now let’s take a few slow, deep breaths as we wind down our time together. If any of those affirmations stood out to you, feel free to write them down, or just store them safely in your mind to say when you need it. If you have an affirmation that is special to you, I would love to hear it! You can even send a recording of an affirmation to play on the show. Have a grownup check our website or show notes for more information.

I’d like to end this episode with a song called I’m Glad That I Am Me. Feel free to just relax and listen, or think of other people you’d like to make wishes for as I sing.

I’m glad that I am me
I’m glad that you are you
I’m glad that we both do the things
That we each like to do
I’m glad that I know you
I’m glad you know me too
We’re different but we teach each other
Things we never knew
What if you were me?
And what if I were you?
Would we still do the same things
That we’ve always liked to do?
I wonder…
But you’ll always be you
And I’ll always be me
We learn and grow and change our clothes
But stay the same beneath
I’m glad that I am me
I’m glad that you are you
I’m proud of how you’re growing
And I like your point of view
And I like you

I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon. Until then, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
