Noah: Hello! I’m Noah and this is Like You, a mindfulness podcast for kids. I’m so glad you’re here! On this episode, we’ll imagine a night sky full of stars as we remember that it’s always night time somewhere in the world. So listeners of all ages, find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. I invite everyone listening to be a part of this podcast – That means you! You can use your imagination, share your thoughts, and speak up when I ask questions or invite you to say affirmations. Of course, if you’d rather just think things quietly in your mind, that’s ok too.

Let’s begin with a breathing exercise to help calm your body and clear your mind. Start by imagining a night sky. Maybe you could turn out the lights, or close your eyes to make things feel dark. Picture thousands of stars twinkling in the sky. More stars than you can count. Now out of all the stars, pick out one star to focus on. Imagine that star twinkling very slowly. Each time you breathe in imagine it glowing brighter, and each time you breathe out it gets a little dimmer. Now let’s breathe slowly with the star. Breathe in, glowing brighter 1-2-3. And breathe out getting dimmer 1-2-3. Brighter breathing in 1-2-3. Dimmer breathing out 1-2-3. And brighter 1-2-3. And dimmer 1-2-3. One last time in 1-2-3. And out 1-2-3.

Now on the count of 3 we’ll all say I like me. 1-2-3 I like me!

I like you too. You shine like the brightest star, filling the world around you with light and joy.

Now continue picturing that one star shining brightly in a sky full of stars, twinkling just for you. Some people say you can make a wish on a star, so I’m going to make a few wishes now. I’m making these wishes for you. No need for you to repeat them. You can just listen as you let the wish shine over you like the star.

I wish for you to be happy.

I wish for you to be cared for.

I wish for you to have everything that you need.

I wish for you to be a good friend.

I wish for you to feel proud of yourself.

I wish for you to be filled with peace.

As you continue imagining the night sky, let’s think about how it’s always night somewhere in the world. As the earth spins, it makes one full turn every day. When your side of the world is facing the sun, it is day where you are. And when your side faces away from the sun it is night. But have you ever thought about what is happening on the other side of the world? When it’s day on your side of the world, there are people on the other side of the world who are facing away from the sun as they sleep through the night. And when it is night time for you, it is day time on the other side of the world. Somewhere on the other side of the world there’s a kid who is a lot like you in a lot of ways. Imagine another kid who is your same age and your same height. Imagine they have hair that looks like yours, and they enjoy all the same things you enjoy. They experience the same kind of feelings as you. They have the same worries and fears as you. They get happy about the same things that make you happy. The one big difference is that your day time is their night time.

As you think of this kid on the other side of the world, imagine that it is night time where they are. Imagine that kid looking up at the sky and picking out 1 shining star. Imagine that star getting brighter and dimmer as you breathe in… and out. In… and out. And now let’s wish on that star, making the same wishes I made for you. I’ll leave some silence after each wish so you can feel free to repeat the wishes out loud or in your head, or to just listen and think about them.

I wish for you to be happy.

I wish for you to be cared for.

I wish for you to have everything that you need.

I wish for you to be a good friend.

I wish for you to feel proud of yourself.

I wish for you to be filled with peace.

Now bring your mind back to the night sky one last time. Picture all the thousands of stars in the sky. Imagine that each star represents another child somewhere in the world. You can picture boys and girls, tall and short, dark skin, light skin, all sorts of different kids. And imagine a star shining brightly for each of those kids. Chances are you will have some things in common with many of those children, and in other ways you will be different. Each of you is unique, and yet alike. There may be different things that make each of you laugh, but all of you laugh sometimes. There may be different things that make you sad. But all of you are sad sometimes. You might eat very different types of food from kids in other parts of the world, but you all eat food. The sun will rise and set at different times around the world, but the sun will always rise and set each day. Take a few more deep breaths as you imagine that sky full of stars. Each star twinkles a little differently, but every star shines.

Let’s say a few affirmations together now. Affirmations are words you can say about yourself to remind yourself how wonderful you are. You can say them out loud or inside your head. I’ll say each affirmation twice. So you can listen the first time, then say it together with me the second time.

The world has a need for me.

I choose to let my light shine.

I like what makes me different.

I like what makes you different.

I am caring for others.

I accept myself.

I will allow peace to fill my soul.

I love myself no matter what.

Now let’s take a few slow, deep breaths as we wind down our time together. If any of those affirmations stood out to you, feel free to write them down, or just store them safely in your mind to say when you need it. Right now I want to play an affirmation sent to us by a podcast listener.

Bo: Hi my name is Bo, and I am from Washington. I’ve traveled all around the world and I am 5 years old. Here’s my favorite affirmation: I will help other people and myself.

Noah: Thank you Bo! What a wonderful affirmation for us to hear after an episode where we sent wishes out to people all around the world.

If any other listeners have an affirmation that is special to you, I would love to hear it! You can have a grownup check our website or show notes for ways to get in touch and share your affirmations.

I’d like to end this episode with a song called Starlight. As you listen, you can picture a sky full of shining stars. Or you can make wishes for people you love. Or just relax and listen as I sing.

Dark night
Feels like I can’t see the light
But I know there’s a glow
Inside me
Starshine
This little light of mine
Since I know it’s there, I might as well share
Share it with youWherever you are
You’ll shine like a star
You won’t ever be alone
You’re surrounded by stars
Who like you as you are
And you’re bright on your own, but we shine
Brighter together

Starlight
I wish upon a star tonight
And when it comes true you will know that you
Are loved the way you are
When you
Feel like nobody gets you
Look up at the stars and you’ll know you are
Never alone

Wherever you are
You’ll shine like a star
You won’t ever be alone
You’re surrounded by stars
Who like you as you are
And you’re bright on your own, but we shine
Brighter together
Let your light shine bright
Through the night let your light shine

I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon. Until then, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
