Noah: Hello! I’m Noah and this is Like You: Mindfulness for Kids. Welcome to this special birthday bonus episode. That’s right, it’s our podcast birthday! Our pod-day? Pod-iversary? Birth-pod? Whatever we decide to call it, we’re celebrating four years of Like You, since we published our first episodes the last week of January in 2020.

A lot has changed since then! My daughters were 6 and almost 3 years old when I launched. Now they are 10 and almost 7. How old were you when Like You launched in January of 2020? Take a second if you need to do the math.

Some of our youngest listeners probably weren’t even born yet!

This episode will be a little different than a normal episode. I just wanted to do something special to mark our birthday, because I haven’t made a birthday episode since our podcast turned 1 in 2021. So we’ll listen to a few songs, say some birthday affirmations, and blow out some birthday candles.

I’ll kick it off right now with a birthday song called “Someone Like You” feel free to bookmark this episode and come back to listen to this song on YOUR birthday.

Before you were born

We waited for you

We all knew the world needed

Someone like you

Now it’s your birthday

And everyone’s so glad you’re here

It’s let us tell you what you’re worth day

Just think of how you grew this year

So happy happy birthday

I hope you don’t mind if we cheer

For today, which is the first day

Of another special year

We’re all so glad you’re here

We’re all so glad you’re you

We all can’t wait to see

All the things that you will do

We’re glad that you were born

We love to see you grow

We’re proud of who you are

Impressed by what you know

And all around the world

There’s no one quite like you

So you say “I like me”

And we’ll say “I like you”

Before you were born

We waited for you

We all knew the world needed

Someone like you

I hope you enjoyed that song! Now let’s say some birthday affirmations. Just like the other parts of this episode, I suggest you hold on to these affirmations to say whenever your birthday rolls around. You can look in the mirror and say these to yourself to kick off a day of celebrating you. But right now, we’ll all say them, no matter how close or far away your birthday is at the moment. I’ll say each affirmation twice, so you can listen once, then say it with me the second time. Here we go.

It’s a great day to celebrate being me.

I deserve to be loved.

The world needs someone like me.

I am proud of who I am.

I am growing inside and outside.

I get better every single day.

This will be an amazing year.

There’s no one better to be than myself.

If any of those affirmations stood out to you, feel free to write them down, or just store them safely in your mind to say when you need it. If you have an affirmation that is special to you, I would love to hear it! If you’d like to send a recording of your favorite affirmation to play on the show, have a grownup check our website or episode notes for more information.

Now let’s listen to another song. Since no birthday is complete without presents, I’ll sing “ A Present to Me.” This song is about saving up special happy moments in your mind, so you can unwrap your memories like a present when you need some cheering up.

I’m thinking about my day

And what made me feel most pleasant

I’m putting a memory away

I’m wrapping it like a present

I’ve got a good gift to give

I’ll know the right moment to give it

I’ll have a smile on my face

Every time I relive it

I’m saving a moment from my day

And I’ll make it a present to me

I know how to cheer me up

Cause nobody knows me like I do

And when I feel like giving up

I’ll do my best just to try to

I’m wrapping a present to me

I can’t wait for me to see it

I’m wondering what it could be

I’ll store it away ’til I need it

I’m saving a moment from my day

And I’ll make it a present to me

I’m saving a moment from my day

And I’ll make it a present to me

Now I want to do a quick birthday breathing exercise. This is actually my favorite go-to breathing exercise. I love it because it’s fun and easy to visualize. It almost tricks you into take deep breaths. Start by holding up all the fingers on one of your hands, and pretend your fingers are birthday candles. Now blow softly on your fingers, and give them a little wiggle like a candle flame. They wiggle, but they don’t go out. Blow again softly on the candle flames. They wiggle but they don’t go out. You’re going to have to blow a little harder to blow the candles out. So breathe in deep, blow as hard as you can, and wiggle your fingers like crazy. Then drop your fingers like the candles got blown out. And that’s it! You can blow out the birthday candles any time you need to take a deep breath.

Now I want to end with yet another song. This is the first song I ever wrote for the podcast, and it’s actually the theme music that plays at the beginning and end of every episode. So you hear it all the time, but you hardly ever hear me sing the words. So today I’m going to sing the words to the song as I think back about all the things that have happened on the podcast since I first wrote these words more than four years ago.

I was just like you
And I just like you
Others you know feel what you feel inside you
It’s a very good day to just
Speak up and say
“I like you”
When you are laughing
When you feel lonely
Try to remember that you’re not the only
One who feels like you
Others can like you
Just as you are, just the way that you like you
It’s a very good day to just
Speak up and say
“I like you
And her
And him
And me
And them
I like you”

I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon. Until next time, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
