15: Three Things: A Game You Can Play in Your Mind

Today I’ll introduce you to a simple game called Three Things. You can play it anywhere, any time; all you need is your mind. The goal is to notice the things around you or the things going on inside you.

Hello! My name is Noah, and this is Like You, a mindfulness podcast for kids. This podcast is listener supported, which means we would love your help to keep it going. So, grownups, please visit patreon.com/likeyoupodcast to chip in and help us make more episodes. Thank you to Wesley and Gretchen for sending me the message for the top of the show. It sounded like you were having lots of fun, and I loved hearing about your favorite activities. That was perfect for today’s show because we’re going to learn a simple game you can play any time. It’s not as active as ballet or soccer; in fact it’s a game you can play inside your own head. I call this game Three Things. Before I teach you, as always, I want you to find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. Remember when I ask you questions, or tell you to repeat something, you can speak out loud, or just think it quietly in your head.

-Let’s get our minds focused with a breathing exercise. Since we’re going to play a game called Three Things, let’s try breathing in three different ways. The first breath is one we do often on this show – long deep breaths. So take a deep breath in 123, and out 123. Great! Breath number 2 is a big puff out. Sometimes when you’re feeling anxious it might be hard to take a long deep breath in, so for this breath we’ll just focus on breathing a big puff of air out. Like this. You can try it with me.

Now breath number 3 is a snake breath. Take breath in and then make an S sound as you breathe out, like this. See how long you can make the S sound.

Ok, that was three different types of breaths. Now let’s count to 3 and say “I like me.” 1, 2, 3 “I like me!”

Are you ready to learn how to play Three Things? It’s really easy to play. The goal is to stop and notice the things around you, or the things going on inside you. You can play it any time, anywhere. And you can make it your own by changing it up any way you would like. The only rule is you have to say Three Things. We’ll play a few different examples together.

First, we will look around and say three things we can see. Let’s take turns. I’ll go first. I see a window, a guitar, and a microphone. Now look around you. What are three things you can see?

If you play this game in a different place, you’ll have different answers. When you’re in your room you could ask yourself “what are three things I see in my room?” When you’re outside on a walk you could ask yourself “what are three things I can see outside?” But it doesn’t just have be about things you can see. You can also play this game with things you can think about.

Let’s try another one. This time close your eyes. We’re going to think about three things that make us happy. I’ll go first. Music, reading, and playing with my family. Now your turn. What are three things that make you happy?

Are you starting to catch on to how this game works? Let’s try another one. This time we will say three things that are bigger than us. I’ll go first. An elephant, a house, and an airplane. Now it’s your turn. What are three things that are bigger than you?

I think you’re getting the hang of the game. You just ask a question, and then say three things. You can come up with your own questions too. You could ask things like: Who are my three best friends? What are my three favorite songs? What are three things that make me laugh? What are my three favorite foods? What are three kind things I said today? The possibilities are endless. You can play it anywhere, any time.

Let’s play once more together right now. Let’s both say three things we like about ourselves. I’ll go first. I like my smile, my sense of humor, and the way I can make music. Now it’s your turn. What are three things you like about you?

Thank you for playing that game with me, and remember, you can play this game on your own any time, or even teach it to your friends.

Since we’re already saying things we like about ourselves, let’s say some affirmations. Affirmations are short sentences that help you feel good about yourself. you can say these out loud or in your own head. Repeat after me:

I like me *

I am loved. *

I am kind. *

There is no one better to be than myself. *

The world needs someone like me. *

I woke up today, ready to love. *

Now smile, and take a few slow, deep breathes as we wind down our time together.

I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon! On the next podcast, we’re going to play another game. It’s a guessing game, where I play you a sound, and you guess what it is. Until next time, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
