[intro music]

Noah: Hello! I’m Noah and this is Like You: Mindfulness for Kids. I’m very glad you’re here. On this episode we’ll look ahead to the new year as we talk about changes and learn to pay attention to the things we like about ourselves. So listeners of all ages, find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. As I ask questions and invite you to say affirmations, you’re welcome to speak out loud, or as always, you can just think your responses quietly in your mind.

Let’s start with a breathing exercise to help relax your body and focus your mind. I’m going to sing a short breathing song about a spinning wheel, and as I sing, I want you to do circle breaths. What’s a circle breath? I’ll tell you. If you have something to draw with, you can draw a circle on a piece of paper. If you don’t feel like drawing it right now, you can just imagine a circle in the air in front of you. Either way, use your finger to trace slowly all the way around the circle as you take a long, deep breath in. When you reach back to where you started, breathe a long breath out as you slowly trace the circle again. Then keep going. Trace the circle once while breathing in, then trace it again while breathing out. Now keep going round and round like that while I sing.

Breathing in as it spins

Breathing out, spin around

Breathe in like a bicycle wheel

Breathe out all the things you feel

Breathing in as it spins

Breathing out, spin around

One more spin while breathing in

Last time ‘round you’re breathing out

Great job.

On the count of three let’s all say I like me. 1-2-3. I like me.

I like you too. You’ve grown a lot in the last year, and you’ll grow even more next year. I’m proud to be part of your journey.

At the start of each year, many people have a tradition of setting new year’s resolutions. Is that something you’ve done with your family or in school?

We’ve talked about resolutions on this podcast before. You can search for an episode called Resolutions and Affirmations if you want to hear it. But today we’re going to think about resolutions a little differently. For many people, a resolution is about something they want to change in their life. Maybe they want to eat less junk food, or read more books, stop a bad habit, or set a new routine. But today instead of thinking about what you want to change, I want you to spend some time thinking about what you love about yourself, so you can make resolutions about what you want to stay the same. Maybe you’re a really good big brother or sister. Maybe you are a thoughtful and caring friend. Maybe you’re really good at asking questions. Or maybe you practice deep breathing every day. Those are just some examples to get your mind going. Take a few moments to think about things you like about yourself.

[10 second pause]

What was something you thought of?

Whatever you thought of that you like about yourself, I hope you’ll resolve to keep being as wonderful as you are. Try repeating this out loud or in your head: I resolve to be me!

Now, in addition to that resolution, I want you to pick a new year’s affirmation. Affirmations are words you can say about yourself to remind yourself how wonderful you are. And aa new year’s affirmation can be an affirmation you choose to say to yourself often this year. Maybe you’ll say it every morning when you wake up, or every night before bed. I’ll say a few affirmations now. You can choose one of these if you like, or come up with your own later. I’ll say each affirmation twice. You can listen the first time, then say it with me the second time, either out loud or inside your mind.

Every day I will learn and grow.

I will try new things.

I love myself deep down inside.

I will share my joy with the world.

My ideas are creative and original.

I can choose my attitude.

I’m a magnet for wonderful things.

I will learn from yesterday and live for today.

Now let’s take a few slow, deep breaths as we wind down our time together. If any of those affirmations stood out to you, feel free to write them down, or just store them safely in your mind to say when you need it. If you have an affirmation that is special to you, I would love to hear it! If you’d like to send a recording of your favorite affirmation to play on the show, have a grownup check our website or episode notes for more information.

Now let’s end this episode with a song. Feel free to sing, dance, or relax and breathe deep as I sing.

I like me

I like me

I grow and change, but stay the same

I am always me

What has been, has been

What will be, will be

I am right here, right now

I like me

Once I was a baby

When I’m grown, who will I be?

It grows from who I am today and

I like me

I like me

I like me

I grow and change, but stay the same

I am always me

I am who I was

I am who I will be

I am always who I am

and I like me

I don’t remember everything

I can’t guess what will be

But I know who I am right now

And I like me

I like me

I like me

I grow and change, but stay the same

I am always me

I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon. Until next time, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
