Alison: Hi my name is Alison I’m 6 years old and I live in Memphis, TN. I really like this podcast because it makes me feel very relaxed and I just really like it!
Noah: Hello! My name is Noah, and this is Like You, a mindfulness podcast for kids. Thank you, Alison, for sending in that message! I’m glad our podcast helps you relax. Today we’ll be relaxing as we go on an adventure! A relaxing adventure? That’s right! We’ll get to that soon! First, I want mention that this podcast is listener supported, which means we would love your help to keep it going. So, grownups, please visit patreon.com/likeyoupodcast to chip in and help us make more episodes. Today we’ve got a relaxing adventure that involves listening to the sounds of different places. First, find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. Remember when I ask you questions, or tell you to repeat something, you can speak out loud, or just think it quietly in your head.
Today we’re going to start our adventure with some mountain breaths. If you’re able to, lay down for this breathing exercise. You can lay on the floor if you have the space. If you’re riding in a car, or you’re unable to lay down right now, that’s ok too. You can sit or stand if you need to. Whatever position you’re in, n ow I want you to look down at your stomach. We’re going to take a long deep breath, and I want you to imagine your stomach is a mountain growing bigger as you breathe in. So take a deep belly breath and watch your stomach get bigger like a mountain. Then breathe out and watch the air leaving your belly as the mountain gets smaller and disappears. Let’s try it together. Deep breath in. Watch your belly mountain grow. Now let it out and the mountain disappears. One more time. Deep breath while you watch you belly mountain grow. Now breathe out and watch the mountain get smaller and disappear.
Ok, I hope you enjoyed that visit to belly mountain. If you want, you can sit back up, but if you’re happy lying down, feel free to stay that way. Now let’s count to 3 and say “I like me.” 1, 2, 3 “I like me!”
I like you too! I’m proud of how much you are learning and growing. Now it’s adventure time. I’m going to play you some sounds from different kinds of places around the world, and we will close our eyes and imagine we are there. Before we start, I need to give you a warning. Some of the sounds I will play involve the sounds of water, like trickling streams, and ocean waves. You kids might think what I’m about to say sounds funny, but sometimes hearing the sound of water makes people need to use the bathroom! I don’t want to cause any accidents, so if you think you need to use the bathroom, you can pause this podcast now or at any time during our adventure to go use the bathroom and come back when you’re done. I’ll be waiting.
Now here we go. I’m going to turn down our music so we can listen to our adventure sounds. The first place we’ll visit is a small mountain stream. Close your eyes, and imagine you’re standing beside a small stream, watching the water trickle over rocks, and little fishes swim to and fro.
[stream sounds]
What do you imagine all around you? I picture a field of green grass, a bright blue sky, and a gentle breeze blowing. It’s very relaxing.
Let’s imagine that nearby, we see a forest. So we walk away from the stream, and we enter the forest. Now we hear the wind blowing through the trees, and lots of birds and insects. Let’s stop and listen and imagine what this forest might look like. [forest sounds]
Now it’s time to leave the forest. We’re going to hop on an airplane and fly somewhere new. Have you ever flown on an airplane? Let’s imagine we’re on an airplane now. This is what is sounds like on an airplane. [airplane sounds]. Close your eyes and imagine looking out the window as you fly high above the clouds.
Ok, now we have landed. And where do you think we are now? Let’s listen [city sounds]. We’re in a city. You can hear the sounds of traffic, and people walking around. Do you live in a big city that sounds like this? Or is your neighborhood a little quieter?
Next we’re going to take a ride on a subway. Some of you may live in a big city that has a subway. A subway is like an underground train that runs on tracks in tunnels under the city. Depending on where you live in the world, you might also call it the metro, the underground, or the tube. We’re going to imagine we’re taking this underground train to the next location on our adventure. Let’s take a ride! [subway sounds]. Since we’re underground, we don’t see the sun. This makes it darker and cooler than it is outside.
Now we’ll pretend we’ve arrived at our final destination. See if you can guess where we are. [ocean sounds]. We’ve arrived at the ocean. Have you ever been to the beach? Imagine you can see sand in every direction. Pretend you are standing barefoot in the sand. You can feel the sand between your toes as you watch the waves slowly washing in and out against the shore. Many people find the sound of waves very relaxing. What do you think?
Well, that wraps up our little adventure for the day. I hope you had fun imagining you were exploring the world without actually going anywhere. You can open your eyes if you’ve had them closed. Look around where you are now. Right back where you started. What was your favorite place we visited?
If you feel like you’ve been spending lots of time at home, remember that you can always travel the world and explore using your imagination. Reading books is one way to travel with your imagination. Another way is to come back and listen to this episode of the podcast whenever you want to hear the sounds of streams and forests, cities, and beaches.
Now it’s time to say a few affirmations. I have a little surprise for you. I’ve invited some friends to join me occasionally on the podcast to say affirmations with us. So in future episodes you’ll sometimes get to hear the voices of other friends. Today we have our first guest. His name is Eso Tolson. Eso is an artist, a musician, and an experience director. That means he enjoys creating inspiring spaces that allow people to feel safe, considered, and included. Will you help me welcome him? Let me hear you say “hi Eso!”
Eso: Yo! Eso here. Are you ready for some affirmations? Listen once then repeat it with me.
I woke up today ready to love.
I can do big things.
I am full of joy.
Today, I will learn and grow.
My positive thoughts create positive feelings.
Noah: Thanks Eso! Now let’s smile, and take a few slow, deep breathes as we wind down our time together.
I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon! On the next podcast, we’ll talk about wonder, which is a feeling that makes you say wow. Until next time, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
