Today we’re talking about two kinds of wonder – the kind of wonder you think in your head, and the kind of wonder that makes you say wow.

Today we’re talking about two kinds of wonder – the kind of wonder you think in your head, and the kind of wonder that makes you say wow. So find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe and get ready to listen. Remember when I ask you questions, or tell you to repeat something, you can speak out loud, or just think it quietly in your head.

Have you ever been up late enough to look up at a sky full of stars? Sometimes the stars can be hard to see if you live in a city like me. But those of you who live in a small town or village you may see stars every night. Today let’s pretend we can fill the sky with stars by blowing twinkly stars into the air. First, close your eyes. Picture a night sky. It is dark and black. If you’ve got your eyes closed that should be pretty easy to imagine. Now we’re going to pretend to light up the night sky. Let’s pretend when you breathe out you can blow stars into the sky. So take a deep breath and slowly blow. Look at that, now there are stars in the night sky. But I think we could use more stars, so let’s do it again. Deep breath… and blow the stars. Now things are really twinkling in our night sky. But I think we can still do more. I want to see the brightest, shiniest sky full of stars that I’ve ever seen. This time we’ll both blow together. Deep breath. And Blow. Wow. Just look at all those stars we made. I’m imagining a very beautiful night sky full of shiny twinkling stars. Can you see it in your mind? When I see something that big and beautiful it fills me with wonder. What exactly is wonder? Well I’m glad you’re wondering too. We’ll talk about it today. But first, we’re going to count to 3 and say “I like me.” Here we go. 1, 2, 3 “I like me!”

Ok, you can open your eyes now. Or keep them closed if you like that. What do you think of when you hear the word wonder?

You might think about being curious. You might think about asking questions. You may say something like “I wonder what the weather will be like today” or “I wonder what we’re having for dinner tonight.” When you say those things, you are wondering. You are also wondering when you ask questions. Why is the sky blue? How big was a dinosaur? How does a bird fly? These are all questions that fill you with wonder. You want to learn more. You want to find an answer.

But there’s also another type of wonder that I want to tell you about. It’s the way you feel when something makes you go wow. When you learn something so cool it’s almost unbelievable. When you experience something amazing. This kind of wonder is hard to explain, but you know it when it happens. It’s like magic. There are little bits of magic hidden in plain sight all around the world. If you pay attention and keep your eyes open to the world around you, every once in a while you’ll notice the magic, and that’s when you’re filled with wonder.

Different people may find wonder in different things, but here are a few things that may stir up wonder in you. Close your eyes and try to imagine each of these things as I mention them.

Imagine looking at a night sky full of stars.

Imagine watching the very first snowflake of winter slowly drift through the sky.

Imagine walking through a forest full of tall trees.

Imagine hearing a choir sing in beautiful harmony.

Imagine looking at the spiraling fingerprints on the tip of your finger, and knowing that no one else has the same fingerprint.

What else fills you with wonder? Can you think of anything that makes you say wow?

Next time you take a walk, or play in the park, or look at the clouds, be on the lookout for little bits of magic in your world.

Now let’s take a few moments   to say some affirmations. Remember, affirmations are short sentences that help you feel good about yourself. I’ll say each affirmation twice. The first time, just listen, the second time you can repeat it out loud or in your own head. Here we go:

I like me *

I am full of wow*

There’s no one better to be than myself. *

With every breath, I feel stronger. *

I woke up today ready to love. *

Every day, I will learn and grow. *

Now smile, and take a few slow, deep breathes as we wind down our time together.

I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon! On the next podcast, we’re going to take about silly ways to cheer yourself up when you feel sad. Until next time, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
