Please send us a voice memo, drawing, or letter at likeyoupod@gmail.com. We play a voice memo from a listener at the beginning of most episodes. Your child can introduce themself and then say a favorite affirmation, sing a line from a Like You song, say what they like about the show, or share whatever they feel! Keep it short (10-20 seconds), send it to our email, and then wait patiently. It is our goal to share every recording eventually!

Hello! My name is Noah, and this is Like You, a mindfulness podcast for kids. Thank you to Keiraye, and Crosby for sending me that message. Today we’re going to talk about what makes us sad, and then share some silly ways to cheer yourself up! First, I want to invite any grownups listening to become a member of our Patreon group. Now, we’re ready to start the episode, so find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. Remember when I ask you questions, or tell you to repeat something, you can speak out loud, or just think it quietly in your head.

We’ve got a very silly episode today, so let’s get into it! We’re going to get our sillies flowing. When I say go, I want you to make the silliest sounds you can make while you wiggle all around. First, take a deep breath. Now go! Ok, stop! Now let’s take a couple of deep breaths. When you blow your breath out, start out with a high sound and then make it low, like this.

Try that with me. Deep breath in. And out.

This time we’ll start down low and go up high. Deep breath in. And out.

Alright, now let’s go back to those sillies we started with. When I say go, make those silly sounds and wiggle. Deep breath, and go!

Alright, that’s enough for now. We’ll get silly again in a few minutes. Tell your sillies “I’ll see you soon!” Let me hear you. Now on the count of three say “I like me.” 1, 2, 3 “I like me!”

I like you too! You have a wonderful sense of humor and a very unique way of seeing the world. Remember, there’s no one else exactly like you in the world. And at the same time, you have so much in common with other people. We all love to laugh, even if we laugh at different things. We all need people who love us, even though we have our own different groups of friends and family. And we all feel lots of different feelings. Right now, we’re going to talk about one of those feelings that you may not really like to feel. Sadness. When we feel sad, we may frown or cry. Or we may just feel like sitting still or being alone. It might feel like there’s a grey rain cloud hanging over your head, or you might feel a heavy weight in your stomach. Do you ever feel sad? Could you tell me one thing that makes you sad?

Thank you for sharing.

The next time you feel sad, I want you to know you’re not alone. Everyone feels sad sometimes. Including me, including your friends, your family, and your neighbors. So what can we do when we feel sad? You could tell someone you love how you are feeling, and what made you feel sad. Telling someone how you feel is one of the best ways to know you’re not alone, and one of the best ways to start to feel better.

I want you to know that there is nothing wrong with being sad. It’s ok to feel sad sometimes. But what if you don’t want to feel sad anymore? What are some things you can do when you want to cheer yourself up?

I’d like to share a few silly ways to cheer yourself up. We’ll try them together now. Even if you’re not feeling sad right now, we can practice some silly ways to cheer ourselves up so we know what to do next time we are.

The first silly thing you can do is to pick a funny sound and whisper it to yourself over and over until you feel better. What kind of funny sound? That’s up to you. Here are some sounds I think are funny. Boop. Blorp. A-oooga. Any kind of sound you think is funny will work for this exercise. So let’s try it. I’m going to pick the sound blorp. I’m going to whisper that sound over and over, and you can whisper it with me, or pick your own silly sound to whisper. Blorp…

How does that feel? Does it make you smile? Let’s try another silly way to cheer yourself up. If those silly whispers aren’t enough, we can crank the silly up to the next level by plugging your nose while you say something silly. Be sure to breathe through your mouth while you pinch your nose. It makes your voice sound funny like this. Now try saying “wiggle woggle” “teeter totter” “baby bottle.” What do you think? Did that one make you laugh? Now let go of your nose and take a deep breath in through your nose.

Alright, here’s my third silly way to cheer yourself up. You’re going to pick a happy word, but say it in an angry voice. Like this. Cupcake. You can pick any happy word you can think of. Unicorn. Puppy dog. Sprinkles. It sounds funny to say such happy words in such an angry voice. Try it!

Well, It was fun trying out those different silly ways to cheer yourself up. Remember those next time you want to cheer yourself up. Right now it’s time for affirmations. I have another new guest for you today. Her name is Meg Lewis. Meg is working to make the world a happier place through design, comedy, and performance. She’s one of the friendliest and happiest people I’ve ever met, and she has a comedy mindfulness podcast for grownups called Sit There and Do Nothing. Any grownups listening should check it out. So will you help me welcome Meg? Let me hear you say “hi Meg!”

Meg: Hi! It’s our buddy Meg! Are you ready to say some affirmations? Listen to me say it the first time, then join along with me and say it with me the second time.

I will have so much fun today.

My imagination is amazing.

I am good at so many things.

There is only one me.

Thanks Meg! Now let’s smile, and take a few slow, deep breathes as we wind down our time together.

I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon! On the next podcast, we’re going to have a tea party. Until next time, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
