19: You’re Invited to a Tea Party

You’re invited to an imaginary tea party with me and a special guest you get to choose! We’ll whistle or hoot like a tea kettle then cool our tea and take a sip.

Please send us a voice memo, drawing, or letter at likeyoupod@gmail.com. We play a voice memo from a listener at the beginning of most episodes. If your child wants to be included, record a voice memo on your phone and email it to us. Your child can introduce themself and then say a favorite affirmation, sing a line from a Like You song, say what they like about the show, or share whatever they feel! Keep it short (10-20 seconds), send it to our email, and then wait patiently. It is our goal to share every recording eventually!

Today we’re going to imagine we are having a tea party together. First, I have a quick word for the grownups listening. Now, we’re ready to start the episode, so find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. Remember when I ask you questions, or tell you to repeat something, you can speak out loud, or just think it quietly in your head. I’m ready to get this tea party started, so on the count of three I want to hear you say “I like me.” 1, 2, 3 “I like me!”

I like you too! You are a kind and considerate person, and just the thought of you makes all your friends smile.

Speaking of friends, the guests for our imaginary tea party should be here soon. So let’s get the tea ready. Have you ever seen someone boil water in a tea kettle? Many types of tea kettles make a whistling sound when the water is ready. In just a moment we’ll take a deep breath in, and then blow out a long whistle like a tea kettle. Do you know how to whistle? If you can’t whistle, that’s ok, you can just make a high pitched sound like this.

Now let’s pretend to be a tea kettle. Put one hand on your hip to make the tea kettle’s handle, and hold your other hand up like a spout. Now take a deep breath in through your nose, and whistle. Once again. Take a deep breath in through your nose. Now whistle. One last time. Take a deep breath in through your nose, and whistle.

Sounds like our tea is ready, and it’s just in time because our guests have arrived. Who’s going to be at our tea party? Well there’s you of course, and there’s me. If there’s anyone else with you while you’re listening, they are invited too. And I want you to pick one more person to invite to the tea party. It can be anyone you choose. Maybe someone you haven’t seen in a while and wish you could spend some time with. It might be a friend your age. It might be a grandparent. It might be a cousin. Take a moment to think of one person you love who you wish you could be with right now. Close your eyes. Imagine that person is sitting in front of you. Picture what they are wearing, what they look like, what kind of expression is on their face. How do you think they feel? Do they seem happy or sad to be here? I hope they are happy to spend some time with us. Imagine looking at them and say “I’m glad you’re here. Would you like some tea?” They said yes!

Now it’s time to pour the tea. Let’s pretend you are pouring the tea for all your guests. Start with the special guest you just pictured. Imagine you are pouring them a warm cup of tea. Next, I’d like you to imagine you are pouring a cup of tea for me. Why thank you! Now if there’s anyone else listening with you, like a parent or a sibling, pour them a cup next. And last but certainly not least, I want you to pour a cup of tea for yourself.

Now imagine that cup of tea sitting in front of you. It is hot, so there is steam rising from the cup. It smells wonderful. Everyone likes their tea a different way. So let’s imagine everyone is fixing their tea the way they like it. If you want you can pretend to add a spoonful of sugar, a splash of milk, or a drizzle of honey. I’ll take a bit of honey in mine, please. Now we can stir our tea. As you stir, try moving your head slowly in a circle, like your head is a spoon stirring a cup of tea.

Before we sip our tea, we need to cool it down. Imagine you are raising your tea cup in front of your mouth. Now blow gently to cool the tea. Like this. I think the tea is still a little too hot to drink, so let’s blow once more. Good, now the tea is ready to drink. Pretend you are taking a sip, and imagine the warm tea sliding down your throat and into you stomach gently warming you from the inside out. Take another sip. Now we are feeling warm, cozy, and happy to be with our friends.

Comfy cozy

Head to toes-y

Feeling safe and warm inside

My heart feels light

My cheeks feel rosy

Breathing deep and smiling wide

When I feel I can’t control things

When my yes turns into no

When the world seems wild and noisy

And I need some place to go

I can reach inside myself

Pull a book down from the shelf

Think a thought that makes me grin

And imagine deep within I’m

Comfy cozy

Head to toes-y

Feeling safe and warm inside

My heart feels light

My cheeks feel rosy

Now it’s time for affirmations. Our guest today is Mia Saine. If that name sounds familiar, it may be because Mia created the illustration for our podcast cover. Will you help me welcome Mia? Let me hear you say “hi Mia!”

Mia: Hi, I’m Mia! Let’s say some affirmations. Listen once then repeat it with me.

There is no one better to be than myself.

With every breath I feel stronger.

I have people who love and respect me.

I get better every single day.

Everything will be ok.

Noah: Thanks Mia! Now let’s smile, and take a few slow, deep breath s as we wind down our time together.

I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon! On the next podcast, we’ll pretend we are flying through the air like a bird. Until then, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
