34: How Are You Feeling?

We’re back with new episodes! Today we are going to focus on how you are feeling, and talk about ways you can let a feeling go or share it with someone else. I also sing a new song called “However You Feel.”

Show Notes

Like You is listener supported. Learn how you can support the show by becoming a patron on Patreon.

Please send us a voice memo, drawing, or letter at likeyoupod@gmail.com. We play a voice memo from a listener at the beginning of most episodes. If your child wants to be included, record a voice memo on your phone and email it to us. Your child can introduce themself and then say a favorite affirmation, sing a line from a Like You song, say what they like about the show, or share whatever they feel! Keep it short (10-20 seconds), send it to our email, and then wait patiently. It is our goal to share every recording eventually!

Noah: Hi Everyone! It’s Noah. I’m glad to be back with a new episode! So much has happened in my life and yours in the past month. I’ve missed spending time together, so let’s take a deep breath, and get started. Breathe in. And breathe out. Welcome to Like You, a mindfulness podcast for kids. Today we are going to focus on how you are feeling.  But first, a quick word for the grownups. Like You is listener supported, so if you’d like to help us continue making new episodes, join us at patreon.com/likeyoupodcast. We also appreciate it when you help others find our show by telling your friends, or writing a review on Apple podcasts.

Now, we’re ready to start the podcast, so find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. Remember, you’re a big part of this podcast, and I couldn’t do it without you! You can speak out loud as you answer my questions, and repeat affirmations. Of course, if you’d rather just say things quietly in your head, that’s ok too.

Let’s take a few more deep breaths together. Breathing deeply can help us relax and it can help us focus. So any time things start to feel out of control, remember to breathe. We’re going to take deep belly breaths. If you’re breathing deep, you’ll see your stomach going up and down as you breathe. If you’re sitting down, you can put your hand on your stomach to feel it moving. Or if you want to lay down, you could put a toy or a pillow on your stomach and watch it going up and down. Choose a position you like.  And here we go. Take a deep breath in and watch your stomach rise. Now breathe out, and down it goes. Take another deep belly breath in. And a long breath out. One more time. Deep breath in, watch your belly rise. Long breath out. You’re doing great. Now, on the count of three, we’ll say “I like me.” 1, 2, 3 “I like me!”

I like you too! I am grateful for the wonderful energy you bring with you every time you listen to this podcast.

Now I have a question for you. How are you feeling? You can think about it for a moment if you’d like. There are all sorts of feelings, and everyone feels them all at different times. Can you name a few feelings that you feel sometimes?

You may have said happy, sad, anxious, nervous, excited, sleepy, angry, lonely… these are all good answers, and there are many many more feelings, too.

I want you to close your eyes and think back about your day so far. If you’re listening first thing in the morning, you can think about yesterday. As you think about your day, what was the BIGGEST feeling you remember having today? Did something make you really really happy? Did you get so anxious that you cried? Did you feel like screaming because you got angry about something? What was the BIGGEST feeling you remember from today? Take a moment to think about how that feeling felt. Whatever feeling you’re thinking about now, there is someone else feeling the same way. You are never alone in the feelings you have. Now we’re going to do something with that feeling. Imagine you are holding that feeling in your hand. If the feeling you’re thinking of is something you don’t like to feel, I want you to imagine throwing it as far away as you can. It lands far away, and it rolls down a hill, and you don’t even see it any more. Now if the feeling you were thinking of was something you like to feel, then imagine you can see a friend standing far away. Now throw your good feeling to your friend. They catch it and they smile.

Now let go of that big feeling from today. Take another deep breath in. And breathe out. Now I want to ask: how are you feeling right now? Whatever feeling you have right now, take a deep breath, and sit with that feeling. Breathe in… and out. Breathe in, and out. I like to stop throughout my day and ask myself how I am feeling and what is making me feel that way. I know any feeling I have is ok to have, and other people are feeling it too. When we learn to notice and recognize the feelings we have, we can get more practice of holding on to our good feelings, and letting go of our bad feelings.

As you think about your feelings, let’s listen to a song. You can take deep breaths while you listen. This song mentions many different feelings, and what you might do with those feelings.

If you feel like singing

Here’s what you can do

Lalala Lala lala doot de doot da doo

Lalala Lala lala doot de doot da doo

If you feel like laughing

Here’s what you can do

Hahaha hee hee hee hoo hoo hoo

Hahaha hee hee hee hoo hoo hoo

However you feel

Your feelings are real

And you are never alone

So sing out high

And sing out low

And let somebody know

If you feel like crying

Here’s what you can do

Wah wah wah wah boo hoo hoo

Wah wah wah wah boo hoo hoo

If you’re feeling anxious

Here’s what you can do

Breathe in deep, then breathe out too

Breathe in deep, then breathe out too

However you feel

Your feelings are real

And you are never alone

So sing out high

And sing out low

And let somebody know

If you feel like making someone smile

Here’s what you can do

Say “I’m glad that we’re friends, and I like you”

“I’m glad that we’re friends, and I like you”

Now it’s time to say affirmations. Affirmations are short sentences you can say to yourself to remind you how wonderful you are. I will say each affirmation twice, so you can listen to it the first time, then say it with me the second time.

I like me.

I am kind.

I am strong.

I am loving.

I am loved.

I am enough.

I am not alone in my feelings

Remember, we can say affirmations like these any time we need to remember how incredible we are.

Now let’s smile, and take a few slow, deep breaths as we wind down our time together.

I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon! Until next time, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
