4: Cooling Your Hot Chocolate

On today’s episode we imagine we’re drinking a nice warm cup of hot chocolate, but first, we’ve got to cool it down.

Hello! My name is Noah, and this is Like You, a mindfulness podcast for kids. Welcome! I’m very glad you’re here.

I want say a big thank you to everyone who has listened to our first 3 episodes, which were released last week. In the very first episode I told you listeners that it was possible there could be other kids like you listening all around the world, but I didn’t know for sure exactly where all my listeners would be. It turns out than in our first week we’ve had listeners in more than 15 countries, spread across 5 continents! It makes me happy to know that as I record this podcast at home in Memphis, Tennessee, that there are wonderful people like you listening not just all across the United States, but in places like the UK, South Africa, Taiwan, Australia, Portugal, Switzerland and Panama, just to name a few!

This podcast wouldn’t be possible without our listeners. Grownups, you can visit patreon.com/likeyoupodcast to help us continue making weekly episodes. If you’ve enjoyed listening, I hope you’ll take a moment to rate and review the podcast on Apple Podcasts.

On today’s episode we’re going to imagine we’re drinking a nice warm cup of hot chocolate. Mmmmmmm. We’ll get to that soon, but first, find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. Remember if you hear me ask you a question any time during the podcast, you can answer it out loud or think the answer in your head.

You want to know something funny about this episode? I actually wrote it a few weeks ago on a very cold day, because I was thinking about how nice it would feel to warm up with a cup of hot chocolate. But now that it’s time to share the episode with you, it’s actually warmed up quite a bit here in Memphis. Over the weekend my family and neighbors were playing at the park in short sleeves! So even though I had planned to share this episode with you on a cold day, sometimes things don’t go exactly according to plan. Have you ever made a plan that didn’t work out the way you’d hoped? It can be frustrating to deal with something unexpected, but it happens to all of us, kids and grown-ups, too. So wherever you are, whether it is hot or cold right  now I want us to imagine that we are getting ready to enjoy a cup of cocoa on a cold snowy day. Well wherever you are, whether it is hot or cold there I want us to imagine that we are getting ready to enjoy a cup of cocoa on a cold snowy day. Now, I was going to start this episode the way I usually do, by asking you to take some deep long breaths. But you know, what? Ever since I mentioned that we’d be pretending to drink hot chocolate, I can’t stop thinking about it. So let’s just get straight to it. We’re going to do some imagining. So if it helps you to close your eyes, you can do that now.

Who do you usually enjoy a cup of cocoa with? Is it your mom or dad? Your brother or sister? Your grandparents? Maybe it’s your favorite podcast host? Whomever it is, I want you to imagine that a grown-up who loves you has just made you a cup of hot chocolate. Mmmmm, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. I can’t wait to have a sip, but first let’s make sure it’s not too hot.

So imagine you’re holding a mug in your hands. The mug is warm, but it’s not too hot to hold. Slowly lift it up to your lips, but don’t sip yet. First, take a deep breath in through your nose, and imagine you can smell that sweet chocolatey smell of the hot chocolate (deep breath in). Now we’re going to say aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh. Let’s do that again. Take a deep breath in through your nose to smell the cocoa, and then a long breath out through our mouth as you say ah. Like this: in through your nose. And out “aaaaaaaaah.” Once more. Imagine you can really smell the chocolate. Breathe in. And out.

Well, we know our imaginary hot chocolate smells delicious, but let’s pretend it’s still a little too hot to drink. So we’ll have to cool it down first. We’ll take a deep breath, then blow gently on the cocoa to cool it. Don’t blow too hard, because we don’t want it to splash out of the mug. Let’s try it. Breathe deep and blow slowly. Now let’s try again. Deep breath and blow gently. I think it’s still a little hot. Let’s blow one more time.

I think we’ve cooled it down enough! Now let’s pretend to take a sip. Hold your imaginary mug up to your mouth and make a sipping noise like this: *sip. Did your sip taste good? Mine did. Okay, it was fun imagining that we’re drinking hot chocolate together.

Now I’m going to sing you a little song about feeling cozy. Cozy is often how we feel when we’re under a blanket drinking a cup of cocoa with someone we love. Think about how that feels, and next time you start to feel out of control, stop and think about that cozy feeling and see if it helps you calm yourself down.

Comfy cozy
Head to toes-y
Feeling safe and warm inside
My heart feels light
My cheeks feel rosy
Breathing deep and smiling wide
When I feel I can’t control things
When my yes turns into no
When the world seems wild and noisy
And I need some place to go
I can reach inside myself
Pull a book down from the shelf
Think a thought that makes me grin
And imagine deep within I’m
Comfy cozy
Head to toes-y
Feeling safe and warm inside
My heart feels light
My cheeks feel rosy
Breathing deep and smiling wide

Now it’s affirmation time. Affirmations are short sentences that help you feel good about yourself. I’ll say each affirmation twice. The first time you can listen. The second time you can repeat it out loud or in your head. Repeat after me:

I like me. *

There is no one better to be than myself. *

I am full of joy. *

I believe in myself. *

I have courage and confidence. *

I deserve to be loved. *

Now it’s time to wind down our time together, so let’s take one last sip of hot chocolate. *sip. Mmmm.

I look forward to spending some time together again soon! On the next episode, we’re going to learn why this podcast is called Like You. Until then, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
