Like You is listener supported. Learn how you can support the show by becoming a patron on Patreon. Patreon supporters also get a free download of today’s new song, and every song I share on the podcast.

Please send us a voice memo, drawing, or letter at likeyoupod@gmail.com. We play a voice memo from a listener at the beginning of most episodes. If your child wants to be included, record a voice memo on your phone and email it to us. Your child can introduce themself and then say a favorite affirmation, sing a line from a Like You song, say what they like about the show, or share whatever they feel! Keep it short (10-20 seconds), send it to our email, and then wait patiently. It is our goal to share every recording eventually!

Noah: Hello! I’m Noah and this is Like You, a mindfulness podcast for kids. I’m glad you’re here! Today we will spend some time thinking about what makes us feel grateful.  But first, a quick word for the grownups. Like You is listener supported, so if you’d like to help us continue making new episodes, join us at patreon.com/likeyoupodcast. We also appreciate it when you help others find our show by telling your friends, or writing a review on Apple podcasts.

Now, we’re ready to start the podcast, so find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. Remember, you’re a big part of this podcast, and I couldn’t do it without you! You can speak out loud as you answer my questions, and repeat affirmations. Of course, if you’d rather just say things quietly in your head, that’s ok too.
Let’s take a few breaths to get started. We’ll breathe deep just like we always do, but when we breathe out, we’ll make a funny noise. Here we go. Take a long breath in 1, 2, 3. Now breathe out with a funny noise. Let’s do that again. Deep breath in. 1, 2, 3. And let a funny noise out. Last time! Long deep breath in. 1, 2, 3. And funny noise out. Now, on the count of three, we’ll say “I like me.” 1, 2, 3 “I like me!”

I like you too! You have a great sense of humor, and you have a unique way of making others laugh.

What makes you feel grateful? [pause] What is gratitude anyway? When you feel grateful, you feel full of thanks. It is a happy feeling that comes when you focus on the good things in your life. Some people describe gratitude as being thankful, lucky, or blessed. You might feel grateful when you’re glad about something that has happened, an experience you’ve had, or something someone has given you. Can you think of something that you are grateful for? Perhaps you’re grateful for family – for someone who loves you, and takes care of you, and makes sure you have everything you need. Maybe you’re grateful for a friend – someone who is always there for you, who cheers you up when you’re sad, and who never makes you feel bad about who you are. You might be grateful about an experience you’ve had – taking a vacation, learning to play an instrument, playing basketball on a team, finding a really cool looking rock while you’re out for a walk… these are all things that might make you feel grateful.

Gratitude is also about noticing the small, simple, everyday things that you may not always think about. Like having a place to live, and a comfy bed to sleep in, or having food to eat – even when you don’t get your favorite thing for dinner.

When we take the time to notice the good things in our life, it can lead to positive feelings, and even positive actions toward others.

So let’s take a moment to be grateful. I want you to think of something you’re grateful for. It can be anything – family, friends, your home, your favorite book or toy. Take a moment to think of something you are grateful for. Do you have something in mind? Now close your eyes, and for a few seconds just think about whatever it is. Picture it in your mind. Now take a deep breath in and as you breathe out, say thank you.

Sometimes it can be hard to think of what you’re grateful for, so let me narrow things down a bit. What was something that made you smile today? Take a moment to think back on your day so far. What was a moment you enjoyed? When you think of something, imagine that moment in your head. Now take a deep breath in and breathe out “thank you.”

I know some days just aren’t great days. And maybe that’s how your day was today. So it can be hard to think of your favorite moment of the day. So let’s narrow things down even more. I want you to pick something you are wearing that you are grateful for. Your shirt, your socks, your dress, or your pants… pick one thing you’re wearing, and we’re going to say thank you to it. I’ll go first. I’ll take a deep breath… and say “thank you sweater.” Now it’s your turn. You can say thank you to your socks, or your hat, or your pajamas, or whatever piece of clothing you choose. Pick one thing. Take a deep breath in, and breathe out your thanks. Go ahead.

Remember, even on a bad day, if you pay close attention, you’ll find something to be grateful for. And on a good day, whenever something makes you feel warm inside, take note of that grateful feeling by taking a deep breath and saying thank you.

Gratitude is something that you can practice. Many nights, at bedtime, I like to ask my daughters to tell me about one thing that they liked about the day. Maybe you could try that too. Tonight, when you lay down in bed, ask yourself what you liked about the day, then take a deep breath and say thank you as you drift off to sleep.

But don’t drift off to sleep yet! Because it’s time to say affirmations. Even saying affirmations can fill us with gratitude. I will say each affirmation twice, so you can listen to it the first time, then say it with me the second time.

I am an amazing person.

I am glad that I am me.

I am grateful for all that I have.

I am proud of who I am.

I have everything I need.

I am thankful for this moment.

If you’re still looking for ideas about things you can be thankful for, have a listen to this new song. Take a few slow, deep breaths as you listen, and maybe even try singing along when you hear the words thank you.

For beauty and for wonder

Thank you thank you

For my sister and my brother

Thank you thank you

For my food and the things I drink

Thank you thank you

For my mind and the things I think

Thank you thank you

Thank you thank you

For my family and my friends

Thank you thank you

For the courage that grows within

Thank you thank you

For a heart that helps me love

Thank you thank you

For the sun that shines above

Thank you thank you

Thank you thank you

For the people that I get to help

Thank you thank you

For my body and for my health

Thank you thank you

For the energy as I play

Thank you thank you

For the rest at the end of the day

Thank you thank you

Thank you thank you

Let me end the show by saying thank you to you my listeners. It was around this time last year that I began writing episodes for this podcast. I’m very grateful for everyone who has listened so far, and I look forward to many many more podcasts with you. Until next time, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
