Hello! My name is Noah, and this is Like You, a podcast for kids. Welcome! This podcast wouldn’t be possible without our listeners. Grownups, visit patreon.com/likeyoupodcast to help us continue making weekly episodes. On today’s episode we’ll be learning to relax from head to toe. Find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. Sometimes we close our eyes and use our imagination. Other times times I may ask you to say something out loud. If you’re in a quiet place or just feel like being quiet, you can say those things inside your head instead.

Let’s get straight to it! We’re going to clear our heads and focus. Start by closing your eyes. You may have had a busy day today, or maybe you’re just starting the day. But for now try to let go of whatever you’re thinking about and just sit with me for a moment. Now take a deep breath in…123 and out…123. It can be hard to slow down our brains and stop thinking about lots of things, so let’s try focusing on one thing. Think of your favorite color. Green, pink, yellow, blue, purple, red… or whatever it might be – imagine your favorite color being everywhere. What is your favorite color? My favorite color is teal. I like it because it’s a little bit like blue, but a little bit like green. So I’ll be thinking about teal, but I want you to think about whatever your favorite color is. Imagine your favorite color is everywhere. While you picture that, let’s take another deep breath in 123, and out 123. Now picture yourself right in the middle of your favorite color. There you are! Surrounded by your favorite color! Take one more deep breath in 123, and out 123. Now together on the count of three we’re going to say “I like me.” Are you ready? Ok, here we go. 1, 2, 3 “I like me!”

I like you too. We’re going to keep our eyes closed, and keep breathing deeply. Let’s see how relaxed we can be from head to toe. We’ll start at the top of our heads, and work our way down, relaxing each part of ourselves as we go.

Start with your head. Think about relaxing your face. Now move down your neck. Can you relax your neck? It might help to slowly sway your head side to side. Imagine your head is made of feathers that gently move back and forth.

Now move on to your shoulders. Do your shoulders feel tight and tense? Try letting them relax and drop down. Doesn’t that feel better? I’m always surprised by how much better it feels to relax my shoulders.

What about your arms? Are they relaxed? Loosen your arms and let them fall to your sides. Now move on to your tummy. If your tummy feels tight at all, loosen it up, and take another deep breath in 123, and out 123. Now relax your legs. Can you feel your legs being hugged by the chair or wherever you might be sitting?

Now let your feet loosen up all the way down to your toes. We’ve made it. Now you should be feeling relaxed and loose from head to toe.  It feels nice.

Now we’ll work our way back up checking in on each part to make sure we’re still relaxed. We’ll move up a little more quickly than we moved down. I’ll just say each part and you can notice whether it still feels relaxed. Starting with toes. Feet. Legs. Tummy. Arms. Shoulders. Neck. And head. Fully relaxed from head to toe.

Take another deep breath in 123 and out 123. Now see if you can stay relaxed while I sing this short song. Just relax and listen.

I breathe in
I breathe out
I wander head to toe
And I check things out
My head is loose. My shoulders too
My neck and my tummy know just what to do
My arms and my legs are letting go
I’m relaxed from my head down to my toe
I breathe in
I breathe out
I wander head to toe
And I check things out

You did a wonderful job relaxing today. You can teach yourself to relax any time you’re feeling tense or worried or nervous. Just like we did today, you can close your eyes and check in on yourself from head to toe. You can do this all on your own any time you feel like you need to have a calm quiet moment. If you need help learning to relax, you can always come back and listen to this episode again.

Now it’s time to repeat some affirmations. Remember, affirmations are short sentences that help you feel good about yourself. Even after this podcast is over, you can think about these affirmations any time you need something to cheer you up or give you some confidence. I’ll say each affirmation twice. The first time you can listen. The second time you can repeat it out loud or in your head. Repeat after me:

I like me. *

There is no one better to be than myself. *

I am beautiful inside and out. *

I am in control of my feelings. *

All of my problems have solutions. *

Today is going to be my day. *

Now smile, and take a few slow, deep breathes as we wind down our time together.

It’s been great relaxing with you today. I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon! On the next episode, we’re going to talk about listening to what our bodies can tell us. Until next time, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
