This week’s episode features a question game my family loves to play: Would You Rather. This game is all about getting to know yourself and others by considering what you would choose when presented with two options. Play along and maybe you’ll surprise yourself!

Please send us a voice memo, drawing, or letter at hello@likeyoupodcast.com. We play a voice memo from a listener at the beginning of most episodes. If your child wants to be included, record a voice memo on your phone and email it to us. Your child can introduce themself and then say a favorite affirmation, sing a line from a Like You song, say what they like about the show, or share whatever they feel! Keep it short (10-20 seconds), send it to our email, and then wait patiently. It is our goal to share every recording eventually!

Noah: Hello! I’m Noah and this is Like You, a mindfulness podcast for kids. I’m glad you’re here! Today’s episode is all about you! I’ll ask questions for you to ponder as you get to know yourself. First, a word for the grownups. Like You is listener supported, so if you’d like to help us continue making new episodes, join us at patreon.com/likeyoupodcast for early access to every episode, and other special perks. I want to say a special thank you to our newest Patreon supporter, Jameson Harrell! Thank you Jameson! Alright, listeners of all ages, find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. You’re not only just a listener; you’re a thinker, a speaker, and an important part of this podcast. I hope you’ll answer questions aloud and participate in our activities. Of course, if you’d rather just think your answers quietly in your head, that’s ok too.

Let’s think about some of our favorite things while we take a few deep breaths. You may want to close your eyes if that helps you concentrate on your thoughts. First I want you to think about your favorite color. Picture that color surrounding you in every direction. As you think about the color, take a deep breath in 1-2-3. Hold the breath 1-2-3. And a long breath out 1-2-3.

Next I want you to imagine your favorite smell. Is it fresh baked bread or cookies? A ocean breeze? A field of flowers? Think of a smell you like, and imagine breathing it in as you take a deep breath in 1-2-3. Hold it 1-2-3. And breath out 1-2-3.

Now I’d like you to think about a person you love. A person you makes you feel happy. A person who treats you with kindness. Maybe it’s your best friend, a parent, a grandparent, or a teacher. Envision that person standing in front of you and smiling. Now take a deep breath in 1-2-3. Hold it 1-2-3. And breathe a long breath out 1-2-3.

Now on the count of three we’ll all say “I like me.” 1-2-3. I like me.

I like you too. You are wonderful just as you are, and your thoughts, feelings, and opinions matter to me.

Now we’ll play a question game. Some people call this game Would You Rather? I’ll ask you a question that has two options, and you can take a few moments to think about which one you prefer. It’s a fun game that helps us consider different possibilities, and also helps us get to know ourselves better. We are each unique people, with our own likes, dislikes, and personalities. So chances are no two listeners are going to have the same answer for every one of these questions.

After each question, I’ll pause for a few moments, letting the music play while you decide what you would choose. When you have an answer you can say it out loud, or just think it quietly to yourself.

So here’s the first question. Would you rather be very good at playing a musical instrument or very good at playing your favorite sport?

Would you rather climb a mountain, or visit the beach?

Would you rather sleep in late or wake up early?

Would you rather spend time alone reading and drawing, or spend time in a big group running and playing?

Would you rather eat the same food at every meal, or try a new food at every meal?

If you had a super power, would you rather be able to fly or be able to turn invisible?

If you could time travel, would you rather visit the past or the future?

Would you rather know the answer to every question, or be able to make anyone laugh?

It’s fun to ask yourself questions like these. You can ask these same questions to friends or family to discover how you’re the same and how you’re different. Or you may find that your own answers change over time. As we learn new things, and have new experiences, sometimes our opinions and preferences change. Listen back in a few months and see if you answer anything differently. No matter how you change or how you stay the same. You’ll always be you, and there’s no one better you could be.

And that brings us to today’s affirmations. Affirmations are words you can say about yourself to remember how wonderful you are. Repeat these after me.

I believe in myself.

I am so proud of who I am

I embrace the greatness within me

Today I am going to shine

My voice matters

Every day, I will learn and grow.

The world needs someone like me

Now let’s smile and take a few slow, deep breaths as we listen to a song to wind down our time together.

When I’m up I’m up

When I’m down, I’m down

When I smile, I smile

When I frown I frown

When I’m me, I’m me

And that’s who I’ll always be

When I’m me, I’m me

And that’s who I like to be

I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon. Until then, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
