[intro music]

Noah: Hello! I’m Noah and this is Like You, a mindfulness podcast for kids. I’m so glad you’re here! I want to thank Aedan for sending me the voice message that you heard just a moment ago. Aedan, I’m glad to hear that you love the show and that it makes you feel brave and strong. I’ll include a brave and strong affirmation later in the show. If anyone else wants to send me a voice message to play on the show, have a grownup check our website for info about sending in a recording. On today’s episode we’ll talk about ways that your feelings can be like the weather. So listeners of all ages, find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. As I ask questions and invite you to say affirmations, you’re welcome to speak out loud, or as always, you can just think your responses quietly in your mind.

I want to start off with one of my favorite breathing exercises. We did a version of this breathing exercise way back in episode 10 of the the podcast, which was called Floating Like a Rain Cloud. It’s been nearly 2 years since we released that episode, so I thought it was about time to revisit this exercise. It’s my go-to breathing exercise when I need to stop and clear my mind.

If you like to close your eyes while imagining, go ahead and do that now. I want you to picture a grey cloudy day. Five heavy grey rain clouds fill the sky, blocking out the sun, and making everything feel gloomy. Now we’re going to blow those clouds away one by one. So take a long deep breath in as I count 1-2-3. Now blow as hard a you can and imagine 1 cloud floating away. Take another deep breath in 1-2-3, and blow cloud number two away. Now another deep breath in 1-2-3. And blow away cloud number three. There are only two cloud left in the sky now. You can see rays of sunlight beginning to peak out from behind the clouds. So let’s keep going. Take a deep breath in 1-2-3 and blow another cloud away. Only one cloud left. Take your last deep breath in and blow hard and long as your breath chases the last cloud away. Great job! Now the sun is out. You can feel its warmth as it shines down on you. The sky has turned from grey to bright blue. And you can even hear the sound of birds singing as they leave their nests to fly through the clear blue sky. You can open your eyes if you had them closed.

Now on the count of three we’ll say I like me. 1-2-3. I like me.

I like you too. Spending time with you is like seeing the sunshine after a rainy day.

Have you ever thought about how your feelings can be a little bit like the weather? Some days are hot, some are cold. Some are just the perfect temperature to go for a walk or ride a bike outside. Some days are rainy, or snowy, or windy, or sunny, or foggy. The weather changes all the time, and it rarely stays the same way for long. Every once in a while there might be a really big storm, but every storm only lasts a little while before it goes away.

Can you think of any ways that your feelings are like the weather? Take your time to think about it. You can share your thoughts out loud or just keep them in your head.

I would say that just like the weather, feelings can change all the time. Sometimes you feel happy, sometimes sad. Sometimes you feel angry, or worried, or excited, or scared, or nervous, or surprised, or brave, or silly. Sometimes your feelings change 10 times in a single day, or sometimes you might feel 4 different feelings all at once! And just like big storms only last a little while, your big uncomfortable feelings only last a little while before they go away. No weather lasts forever and no feeling lasts forever.

Do you ever feel like certain types of weather even make you feel a certain way? Maybe sunny days make you feel happy and cloudy days make you feel grumpy. Or it could be the other way around. Last week I went for a walk with my 5 year old daughter. It had been a rainy day most of the day. It was wet and grey and gloomy. At least that’s how I saw it. But in the afternoon the rain stopped, and we went out for a walk. It still felt grey and gloomy to me, but my daughter looked around and said “what a beautiful day!” She also said it felt very calm. That just goes to show you that two different people can see the same weather and feel different ways about it.

So let’s use our imagination again. Close your eyes if that helps. I’m going to describe different types of weather for you to imagine, and I just want you to notice how you feel when you think about each type of weather. There’s not right or wrong answer for any of these by the way. You may all feel different about each type of weather. That’s part of what makes you you.

First I want you to imagine a drizzly day. Drizzle is very light rain. The sky is grey, the temperature feels a little cool, but not super chilly. The sun is hiding behind cloud, and a light, drizzly rain falls from the sky. Maybe you’re just looking out the window at the drizzle, or maybe you put on some rainbows, grab an umbrella and go jump in a puddle. What sort of feeling do you feel as you imagine this grey and drizzly day? Happy, sad, calm, sleepy? Answer however you feel.

Next let’s imagine a hot summer day. The sun is shining bright and hot. The sky is blue, the trees are bright green, and the air feels dry. When you walk outside you might squint at the bright sun. Maybe you put on a pair of sunglasses. After a short walk, you feel sweat dripping down your forehead, and you take a long drink of cool water. What feelings do you feel when you imagine a hot summer day?

Next let’s imagine a snow day. The air is cold, but the sun is still shining brightly. Big fluffy snowflakes fall, floating gently through the air. Snow covers the ground everywhere you look. As you walk through the snow, you hear it crunch as your whole foot disappears in the snow. The snow is just the right consistency to make a snowball or build a snow man. The cold air on your face makes your nose turn red. But as you run around and play you start to feel warm under your layers of clothes. What kind of feeling do you feel when you think about snow?

For out last bit of weather imagination, I want you to choose your favorite kind of weather. We can all choose different weather. It might help to start by thinking about your favorite season: spring, summer, fall, or winter. Now use all your senses to think about your favorite weather. Is it hot, cold, warm, or cool? How does your body respond to the temperature? Are there any clouds in the sky? In so what color are they? Is there any rain or snow or wind? What color is the sky? Remember this should be your favorite kind of weather, so just imagine the perfect day to you. Hopefully it makes you feel happy. So spend a few more seconds just imagining the perfect weather as you take a few deep breaths in and out. In and out. As you imagine your favorite weather have a listen to this song about feelings and weather patterns.

Sometimes it’s stormy

Sometimes it’s sunny

Sometimes I’m anxious

Sometimes I’m funny

Sometimes it’s cold

Sometimes I’m sad

Sometimes it’s warm

Sometimes I’m glad

Outside the weather is always changing

It may feel different day to day

Inside me feelings keep rearranging

I feel each one before it goes away

Sometimes it’s foggy

And I feel strange

And when the wind blows

My feelings change

I could feel lonely

When sunshine comes to play

I might feel joyful

Even on a rainy day

The weather patterns are always changing

Things may feel different day to day

And all my feelings keep rearranging

I feel each one before it fades away

Now it’s time for affirmations. Affirmations are words you can say about yourself to remind yourself how wonderful you are. You can say them out loud or inside your head. We’ll say each affirmation twice. You can listen the first time, then say it together the second time. Our friend Eso will join us, and he and I will take turns sharing affirmations

Noah: I am brave and strong.

Eso: I can do big things.

Noah: Every day is a new day.

Eso: I woke up today ready to love.

Noah: I am proud of me.

Eso: I am beautiful inside and out .

Noah: My positive thoughts create positive feelings.

Eso: There is no one better to be than myself.

Noah: Thanks Eso. Now let’s smile and take a few slow, deep breaths as we wind down our time together. If any of those affirmations stood out to you, feel free to write them down, or just store them safely in your mind to say when you need it. If you have an affirmation that is special to you, I would love to hear it! You can even send a recording of an affirmation to play on the show. Have a grownup check our website or show notes for more info.

I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon. Until then, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
