Show Notes

This month we are revisiting some favorite episodes. Maybe you’ve heard these before, or maybe they will be new to you. Brand new weekly episodes of the podcast will resume starting September 29th. Until then, if you’re itching for new Like You content, consider joining us on Patreon, for some behind the scenes content and a new mini project I’m working on. You can sign up at patreon.com/likeyoupodcast.

Like You is listener supported. Learn how you can support the show by becoming a patron on Patreon.

Please send us a voice memo, drawing, or letter at likeyoupod@gmail.com. We play a voice memo from a listener at the beginning of most episodes. If your child wants to be included, record a voice memo on your phone and email it to us. Your child can introduce themself and then say a favorite affirmation, sing a line from a Like You song, say what they like about the show, or share whatever they feel! Keep it short (10-20 seconds), send it to our email, and then wait patiently. It is our goal to share every recording eventually!

Like You is written and produced by Noah Glenn. The show’s artwork was illustrated by Mia Saine. Episode art is created by Lindsey Glenn.

This episode features original music by Noah Glenn, as well as additional music by IMAKEMADBEATS.

Hi everybody! Noah here. Since I launched Like You in January, we’ve shared dozens of weekly episodes. So I decided to spend a few weeks going back to revisit some favorites.

You can sign pat patreon.com/likeyoupodcast.

For now, settle in, get comfy, and enjoy this encore episode starting… now.

Hello! My name is Noah, and this is Like You, a mindfulness podcast for kids. Welcome! I’m very glad you’re here. This podcast wouldn’t be possible without our listeners. Grownups, please visit patreon.com/likeyoupodcast to help us continue making weekly episodes. On today’s episode we’re going to learn how we can give ourselves a present any time we’d like. That’s right! It doesn’t have to be your birthday. In fact it’s great for when you’re having a bad day. And best of all, it’s a present you can give yourself using your imagination. Find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe, and we’ll get started. Remember when I ask you a question, you can answer it out loud or think the answer in your head.

I like to start each episode by clearing our heads. First take a deep breath in 123, and out 123. Breathe in 123 and out 123. Now we’re going to turn a low note into a high note, then back to a low note. I’ll show you what I mean.

Now you try it with me. If you can’t make noise right now, you can just listen, or imagine the note in your head. Deep breath.

Great! Now let’s take another deep breath in 123 and out 123.

On the count of three we’re going to say “I like me.” Here we go. 1, 2, 3 “I like me!”

Great job! I hope you’re excited about giving yourself a present today. This is a very special way you can use your imagination to give yourself a gift. It’s a fun and simple way to cheer yourself up if you’re feeling sad, or frustrated, or having a bad day. And to give yourself this gift, you don’t even have to buy anything. Because it’s not a toy, or a book, or anything like that. This gift is a gift called memory. I’ll teach you how to do it.

First, we’re going to think about our favorite thing that happened today, or yesterday, or really any time. What was something that happened that made you feel very very happy? Was it playing with a friend? Reading a book with your favorite grown-up? Was it a hug from your brother or sister? Maybe it was going for a walk, or eating your favorite food. Maybe you felt happy the last time you sang or danced. I’m going to let you think about something that made you feel happy. Really think about how you felt in that moment.

Now that you’ve thought about something that made you feel happy, here’s what we’re going to do. Picture that moment in your head, and we’re going to pretend that we can wrap that moment up like a present. So in your mind, take that moment, and place it in a box. Now close the box. Imagine that you are covering the box with wrapping paper. It’s your favorite color wrapping paper! Now imagine you are putting a big bow on top of the box. You’re just wrapped yourself a gift. You can keep that memory wrapped up in your head, and the next time you want to cheer yourself up, it will be waiting for you. Next time you feel sad, or frustrated, or disappointed, imagine you are pulling out that present, unwrapping it, opening the box, and inside you can see that happy moment that you wrapped up for yourself.

And you can give yourself that gift again and again. Any time you unwrap it, you can wrap it back up and store it in your mind for the next time you need it. Or you can wrap up another new memory. You can wrap up a new memory every time you have a pleasant experience. Soon you’ll have a whole head full of memories you’ve wrapped for yourself, and you can open one up whenever you need it. And you know you’ll like what’s inside because you made the gift yourself. And no one knows you as well as you know you.

Now I want to sing you a song. While you listen, practice wrapping up a happy memory to give yourself later.

I’m thinking about my day

And what made me feel most pleasant

I’m putting a memory away

I’m wrapping it like a present

I’ve got a good gift to give

I’ll know the right moment to give it

I’ll have a smile on my face

Every time I relive it

I’m saving moment from my day

And I’ll make it a present to me

I know how to cheer me up

Cause nobody knows me like I do

And when I feel like giving up

I’ll do my best just to try to

I’m wrapping a present to me

I can’t wait for me to see it

I’m wondering what it could be

I’ll store it away ’til I need it

I’m saving moment from my day

And I’ll make it a present to me

I’m saving moment from my day

And I’ll make it a present to me

Now it’s affirmation time. Affirmations are short sentences that help you feel good about yourself. I’ll say each affirmation twice. The first time you can listen. The second time you can repeat it out loud or in your head. Repeat after me:

I like me. *

There is no one better to be than myself. *

I am full of joy. *

I believe in myself. *

I have courage and confidence. *

I deserve to be loved. *

Now smile, and take a few slow, deep breathes as we wind down our time together.

I look forward to spending some time together again soon! On the next episode, we’re going to imagine being a cloud floating in the sky. Until then, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
