[intro music]
Noah: Hello! I’m Noah and this is Like You: Mindfulness for Kids. I’m very glad you’re here. On this episode we’ll get to know ourselves better through a question game called Would You Rather. This is actually the second edition of Would You Rather that we’ve done on the podcast. The first one was in episode 68, which came out way back in 2021. So after listening to this episode, if you can’t get enough of the game, you can search for that episode to keep playing with different questions. Right now, find a place to listen where you feel comfortable and safe. As I ask questions and invite you to say affirmations, you’re welcome to speak out loud, or as always, you can just think your responses quietly in your mind.
Let’s start with a breathing exercise to help relax your body and focus your mind. Hold up one hand and spread your fingers wide. Now you’re going trace the outline of your hand, using a finger from your other hand. As you breathe in, trace slowly from your wrist up to the tip of your thumb. Breathe out and slowly trace down the other side of your thumb. Now repeat for each finger. Breathe in deep as you trace up your pointer finger. Breathe out as you trace down the other side. Breathe in as you trace up to the tip of your middle finger, and breathe out as you trace down the other side. Breathe deep as you trace up to the top of your ring finger, then breathe out slow as you trace down the other side. One more breath in, as you slowly trace up to the tip of your pinkie finger. Now slowly breathe out and trace down the other side. Now loosen your shoulders and relax.
On the count of three let’s all say I like me. 1-2-3. I like me.
I like you too. There’s not another you in all the world. And that’s why we need you to make the world complete.
Mindfulness is all about stopping and paying close attention to what’s happening inside you and all around you. A big part of mindfulness is getting to know yourself better. When you pay attention to how things make you feel, you get to know yourself a little better, and in turn that can help you understand other people a little better too.
Now we’re going to play a question game to get to know yourself better. Some people call this game Would You Rather. I’ll ask you a question that has two options, and you can take a few moments to think about which one you prefer. It’s a fun game that helps us consider different possibilities, and also helps us get to know ourselves better. After each question, I’ll pause for a few moments, letting the music play while you decide what you would choose. When you have an answer you can say it out loud, or just think it quietly to yourself. Are you ready? Let’s get started.
Here’s the first question. Would you rather sleep all day or stay awake all night?
Would you rather spend time exploring a big city or hiking in nature?
Would you rather read your favorite book over and over or read a new and different book every day?
Would you rather be 15 feet tall, like a giant or 10 inches tall like a fairy?
Would you rather have the power to take to animals, or the power to read other people’s minds?
Would you rather get an A on every test you take, or score the winning goal in every game you play?
Would you rather be have a rewind rewind button to go back 5 minutes or a fast forward button to skip ahead 5 minutes at a time?
Would you rather be the absolute best at doing one thing, or be pretty good at everything?
It’s fun to ask yourself questions like these. You can ask these same questions to friends or family to discover how you’re the same and how you’re different. Or you may find that your own answers change over time. As we learn new things, and have new experiences, sometimes our opinions and preferences change. Listen back in a few months and see if you answer anything differently. No matter how you change or how you stay the same. You’ll always be you, and there’s no one better you could be.
Now it’s time for affirmations. Affirmations are words you can say about yourself to remind yourself how wonderful you are. I’ll say each affirmation twice. So you can listen the first time, then say it together with me the second time. Here we go.
I love myself exactly as I am.
I respect all points of view.
I am unique and so is each person I meet.
I am curious about the world around me.
My mind is full of brilliant ideas.
Anything is possible.
Now let’s take a few slow, deep breaths as we wind down our time together. If any of those affirmations stood out to you, feel free to write them down, or just store them safely in your mind to say when you need it. If you have an affirmation that is special to you, I would love to hear it! If you’d like to send a recording of your favorite affirmation to play on the show, have a grownup check our website or episode notes for more information.
Now let’s end this episode with a song. Feel free to sing, dance, or relax and breathe deep as I sing.
Let your body move
Any way you feel
You can wiggle all around, or make a funny sound
Or spin like a wheel
Notice how it feels
As you dance around
Check in as you go, from head down to your toe
From sky down to the ground
Breathe freely
There’s no wrong way to move
Breathe deeply
And try to feel the groove
You can dance real wild
Or graceful, smooth, and slow
However it feels cool, there isn’t any rule
So just go with the flow
And when you need a break
Sit down and take a rest
And while you’re in your seat, your heart will keep the beat
It’s dancing in your chest
Breathe freely
There’s no wrong way to move
Breathe deeply
And try to feel the groove
I can’t wait to spend some time together again soon. Until next time, I like you, I’m proud of you, and I’m glad we are friends. Have a happy and peaceful day.
